The furnaces of the Quaker, Abraham Darby III, cast the sections for the first iron bridge across the Severn at Coalbrookdale. Earlier, at the start of the Industrial Revolution, his father and grandfather had smelted iron ore to make anything from nails to large castings. Applying Quaker principles, profits were re-invested in the business and devoted to the welfare of their workers.
