Elizabeth Fry & the Patchwork Quilts
< back to panels
When Elizabeth Fry visited the women in Newgate Prison she realised that they needed to be occupied and so provided things for them to do and set up schools to educate their children. Women being ‘transported’ to Australia as a punishment were given things for the journey and encouraged to make patchwork quilts.
