The Quaker Backhouse Bank in Darlington was faced with a large call on its gold reserves. On the return journey from London with the gold, the coach lost a wheel. By placing all the gold in the opposite corner Jonathan Backhouse was able to ‘balance the cash’, complete the journey and uphold the Quaker name for reliability.
