School Group Visits

It is important to pre-book your class visit.
We welcome school and college groups of all ages, and can tailor the work we offer to do with young people, according to your needs. We like to discuss the various options with the class teacher well before the day you will visit.
  1. You may be visiting the Tapestry Exhibition because your class is about to embark on a textile project of their own and you need some inspiration.
The Tapestry is ideal for this and our qualified teacher on hand will show the class some of the children's designs and stitching on the Tapestry and talk about how this was achieved.
  2. You may be visiting us because the exhibition is situated inside the Quaker Meeting House and you want to compare 'our place of worship' with other churches the class may have visited.
Kendal Meeting House (1816) and the Tapestry exhibition are ideal for this -
    • We can sit together in the Meeting Room where Friends (Quakers) meet for worship and ask the children to compare this room to the churches they have visited. There are many comparisons and the children are soon making a huge list of differences and some similarities.
    • We have 'QUIET' games to play within the seated circle of children which allow the youngsters to experience a little of what it is like to sit quietly.
    • We have replica Quaker bonnets and hats for some of the children to try on and, using some photographs of the Tapestry, we talk about the 'plain dress' that Quakers used to wear.
    • We have especially designed activity sheets or 'Treasure Hunts' for the children to work through as they view the Tapestry and discover fascinating facts about Quakers throughout 350 years. They can work individually or in pairs.
    • If time permits there is a ten-minute video to see.
  3. You may be visiting the Tapestry in connection with a history project. The Tapestry covers many topics from 1600s to the present day.
    • The Victorians
    • Industrial revolution
    • Peace studies
    • 1940 - 45 war
    • Slavery and prison reform
    • And much more!

How much time will we need?
We have school visits which last anything from one hour to all day! As well as the main meeting room where we gather the group to start and finish your visit, we also have a schoolroom available for hire. If your group is larger than 30 we will need to divide you into two groups - so while one group are looking at the Tapestry, the other group will be working with some of the Tapestry photographs, listening to Tapestry stories, creating designs for their own textiles etc.
This room can also be booked for eating your picnic lunch if the weather is too cold or damp to sit outside in the Quaker Garden.

 Where to find us
Close to Kendal town centre, by the river Kent, at the Friends Meeting House in between New Road and Stramongate.
