12,468 visitors came to see the Quaker Tapestry in Chester during February 2008. On the last Saturday of the Roadshow, we had an amazing 910 visitors - an all time record which we feel will take a bit of beating…
It all got off to a good start with the Opening Event on Thursday, 31st January. The Very Reverend Professor Gordon McPhate, gave everyone a warm welcome to the Cathedral, followed by Alison Leonard, a local Friend and writer who spoke on behalf of Quakers in the area. Felicity Goodey, Chair of the Northwest Tourism Forum and a great deal besides, gave a very warm and eloquent speech and then proceeded to cut the ribbon for us which signalled the start of the Roadshow...
It seemed to be busy from the start - but because we were fortunate to have the whole of the South Transept of the Cathedral to ourselves - the panels were nicely spaced out with plenty of room for everyone to see them without too much trouble.
“What a fantastic exhibition, so professional and full of feeling.” Sally Drumb, Shrewsbury Visitors book - Chester Roadshow 2008
Our thanks to the Cathedral staff who were wonderful. We got to know the friendly girls on reception and other staff members who were quick to give us any help we needed. We grew accustomed to the pink sandstone, beautiful stained-glass windows, the organ and choir practices - and soon became part of the daily life of this magnificent building.
As always, it was lovely to renew our acquaintance with stewards we had not seen for a while - and to get to know new ones from the local area. We were lucky to have a steady stream of embroiderers who always attracted a crowd of interested onlookers. It was especially good to have Maurice Hopper with us for a while with his new panel "Working in the Silence".
It would be impossible to do the Roadshows without the help of so many people who willingly give their time, expertise and effort - or spare bedrooms!
“Comforting, heart-warming, educational, most of all peaceful during a busy day. Thank you.” M Firman, Chester Visitors book - Chester Roadshow 2008
